Fostering Innovation to Respond to Challenges Report Cover

The National Institute of Justice invited police chiefs from across the country to attend a two-day workshop in August 2018 to pinpoint critical issues confronting law enforcement collectively. Common themes that emerged from this meeting involved law enforcements’ growing volumes of video and other digital evidence to review; the current policing environment endangering officers’ health, wellness, and performance; better strategies, tactics, and tools to improve community relations and public trust; and helping officers manage an ever-increasing flood of information. The chiefs’ panel also suggested innovation needs to address the challenges presented. The event was designed to inform leaders of law enforcement agencies and federal criminal justice organizations, as well as policymakers and technology providers. It was part of the Priority Criminal Justice Needs Initiative. This initiative is a partnership of RAND Corporation, the Police Executive Research Forum, the University of Denver, and RTI International. This article outlines the report that RAND produced about the chiefs’ panel’s work.
