Practical Approaches to Sustaining Innovative Policing Initiatives

On September 13, 2018 at 2 p.m. ET, the Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) presented a webinar on “Practical Approaches to Sustaining Innovative Policing Initiatives.” This online, interactive, seminar engaged both the law enforcement community along with state and local government officials on how SPI sites are planning and sustaining new innovation. Participants gained a better understanding of the importance of thinking and planning for program sustainment from the beginning of the project as well as heard from SPI sites that are in various phases of project implementation and sustainment.

Dr. Mike White, Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, set the context by discussing practices, principles and challenges of sustaining policing initiatives and developing a sustainability plan.

Approaches to sustaining innovative policing initiatives were provided by:

  • Christian Peterson, Crime Analyst, Portland Police Bureau.
  • Captain Ryan Mills, East Patrol Division, Kansas City Missouri Police Department.
  • Deputy Chief David LeValley, Detroit Police Department
  • Captain Kari Sloan, Crime Intelligence Unit, Detroit Police Department.
