Successful Strategies to Reduce Gun Violence

On February 28, 2018 at 2 p.m. ET, the Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) program presented a webinar on “Successful Strategies to Reduce Gun Violence.” This webinar focused on the use of offender-based strategies and crime intelligence to target gun-related violence, highlighting successful SPI sites addressing this issue.

Ms. Hildy Saizow, SPI senior subject matter expert, facilitated the webinar and discussed gun violence trends, the role of geography, and perspectives on prevention. Dr. Scott Decker, Foundation Professor School of Criminology and Criminal Justice - Arizona State University, discussed how strategies and impacts of actions that address firearms fit into larger police goals such as suppression and prevention.

Deputy Chief Dennis Kato of the Los Angeles Police Department and Chief Jonathan Lewin of the Chicago Police Department discussed strategies used to combat gun violence in Los Angeles and Chicago. Captain Richard Trudell of the Syracuse Police Department, a recently awarded SPI site, outlined how their department plans to adapt and apply offender-focused policing to fighting gun violence in the city. Participants learned about the different strategies used to reduce gun-violence and the impact the various strategies had on reducing violence.
