The 3D Scanning for Crime Scene Investigation Cost/Benefit Analysis Tool, was developed out of "Analyzing the Impact of Virtual Reality and 3D Capture Technology on Crime Scene Investigation," a project funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) under Grant No. 2016-IJ-CX-0017.

A partnership between the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery Virtual Environments Group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Dane County Sheriff's Office, the project set out to compare several potential methods of capturing 3D crime scene data and provide a cost-benefit analysis report.
